An On-Line Community of House Churches, Simple Churches & Assorted Sojourners

Outreach, Service, Block Parties & Other Manias

Welcome to that part of Cyber Cafe dedicated to discussing and featuring house church and simple church outreach ideas and activities. Outreach is all about fulfilling the "mission". Author Alan Hirsch ("The Forgotten Ways") has commented that it isn't so much that God has a church in need of a mission, as God has a mission which requires a church. Are you and your house church part of "the mission"? Are you engaged in some form of creative outreach to your neighborhood or community? If so, let us know. We would love to feature it here.
West Central Summer Blast Days 2006. Our “West Central Summer Blast Days” has come and gone, and by all measurements (that matter!) it was a huge success! Last year, working with Larry Whiston & Jan Foland of the Off Broadway Family Outreach, The Parousia Network conducted a “Vacation Bible School” at the West Central Community Center. While it was good, it was thoroughly "religious" (centered around the theme of "A Day In The Life Of Jesus"). While it was well done, and several neighborhood kids attended, I walked away from that experience sensing that we were still doing "religious box" things, only in a different box. So when we began planning for this summer's activities our team agreed that we should de-emphasize the "VBS" and focus on a broader theme, namely, "Making Good Choices."
The Off Broadway Family Outreach 2004. There is much talk today about “community transformation.” But what exactly is community transformation and what does it look like? At The Off Broadway Family Outreach we genuinely believe that the spiritual renewal and transformation of a community will only occur one neighborhood at a time as believers step out of their comfortable traditional boxes and begin taking the Kingdom of God out into their neighborhoods. And that is exactly what God is doing in the West Central neighborhood here in Spokane. God is doing amazing things in the West Central neighborhood through something called “the Off Broadway Neighborhood Outreach! As a local drug dealer recently commented to us, “Things are starting to change in this neighborhood.”  From his lips to God’s ears—Amen!
Thanksgiving Outreach 2004. After 6 weeks of planning, prayer and God's provision, our Thanksgiving Outreach at Holmes Elementary School was a wonderful success. By the end of the day we had fed over 600 people and were able to feed an additional 150 people at our Monday night outreach and make a generous food donation to the Union Gospel Mission. This Thanksgiving Outreach represented a team effort. God raised up many people who contributed time, labor, material and money to make Thanksgiving at Holmes Elementary a reality. Our thanks to all of them!
